Pocket Installation Overview

For all recessed installations, U-channels must be installed prior to the installation of the track system. U-channels can and should be installed before the main shade is ordered to ensure proper coordination and fit.

It is critical to verify that both the tracks and the shade boxes can be installed securely, level, and plumb. Prior to installation, ensure that all necessary blocking or structural carpentry work has been completed to provide solid attachment points for the tracks and shades.

All electrical work must be completed in accordance with local electrical codes and regulations and performed by a licensed electrical professional.

When mounting the KAOS shade system, only use fasteners appropriate to the structural material of the building. Improper fastening can result in system failure or damage.

For optimal recessed installation, we recommend a pocket size of 8" wide by 12" high.

⚠️ Failure to follow these guidelines may compromise the performance, safety, and aesthetics of the installation.

Step 1: Inspect Pocket

1. Verify that the upper corners of the pocket are clear of any obstructions.
2. Confirm no interference with bracket placement or operation.

Step 2: Bracket Installation

1. Position mounting brackets 3/4" from the outside edge of the Tracks.

2. Reference the back plate of the mounting bracket for placement; do not use the latch system as a guide.

3. Use fasteners appropriate to the structure (concrete, metal, wood, etc.), rated to support the full weight of the KAOS Shade system.

4. Ensure brackets are installed securely, level, and properly aligned.

Step 3: Power Wire Preparation

⚠️ Installation must follow all local electrical codes when working with 110v AC power, use a certified electrician when necessary.

1. Prepare the Power Wire
   • Make sure these wires are secured so that they will not be damaged during installation of the cassette.

 

All KAOS shades have an internal disconnect and ships disconnected. Before running the shade, open the shade door and complete the connection.

To use the "Quick Connect" Slide the RED "Lock" away from the center - Press down on the BLACK part between the RED - While pressing Down, pull the connectors apart

Step 4: Installing the Fabric Roll

1. Remove Thumb Screws
2. Install Bracket Inserts
3. Push motor side bracket until it clicks securely into place. (Figure A)
4. Insert the Idler plate onto the Idler pin. (Figure B)
5. Identify the Motor and Idler side, and the correct roll orientation.
6. Position both sides under the cassette and push up simultaneously on the left and right sides.
   • A distinct "click" will confirm the shade is secured.
7. Secure the Thumb Screws (Figure C)
8. Tighten the thumb screws to securely lock the material roll in place on both ends.
9. Pre-check roll for Telescoping, if Keder is not stacked evenly on both sides, CLICK HERE for the instructions to correct this before continuing.

⚠️ The motorplate is secured to the motorhead with the C-clamp, the idler can slide off easily

⚠️ Be sure the motor and its tube adaptor, and idler and its tube adaptor are fully seated into the tube before installing the roll into the cassette.

Step 4b: Shades under 6' Additional Weight Bar Assembly

1. Lower the bottom edge of the shade until it is approximately 5 inches above the ground.
2. Align the front and rear steel bars with the three mounting holes on the hem bar.
3. Attach the front and rear steel bars to the hem bar.

The Rear external weight bar will be the ones with the holes all the way through.

4. Begin by securing one end of the steel bars with one of the three provided weight bar screws. Leave the screw slightly loose.
5. Secure the opposite end with another weight bar screw, also leaving it slightly loose.
6. Install the third screw in the center. Once all three screws are in place, tighten them securely

Step 5: Motor Setup

⚠️ The remotes will NOT be paired to the motors and limits will NOT be set. Make sure to follow the appropriate instructions as the programming methods are very different between the 2 motor types.

1. Identify your Motor Type, the easiest way to identify which motor your shade has is by the remote.
2. Pair the remote to the motor
3. Set the UPPER and LOWER limits (These can be adjusted easily later)
4. Cycle the shade 3-5 times
5. Refer to the appropriate motor programming guide for you shade, see below

It is best practice to only have 1 shade powered up while programming

Step 6: Track Positioning

⚠️ Track placement is critical for proper operation of the shade, this can take some trial and error to get dialed in. DO NOT fully secure the track until this is finalized.

1. Insert The assembled Tracks into the U-Channels.
2. Cycle the shade 3-5 times before securing to the wall while gently holding them in place.

Is the Weight Bar Level?

YES: Skip to Step 7

NO:

1. Note the higher side of the Weight Bar and roughly where it begins to be un-level
2. Lower the shade all the way to the lower limit, and mark the position of the Tracks in the U-Channels.
3. Raise the shade to where it begins to telescope
4. Move the track that in on the higher side Outward to add more tension to that side
5. Cycle the shade 3-5 times
6. Continue to adjust the higher side of the weight bar outward until the shade travels level and no longer telescopes

Step 7a: Measuring and Cutting for Surface Mounted Tracks

1. Cutting the U-Channels

   1. Measure the DISTANCE FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE POCKET TO THE FLOOR.

   2. Add 1" and cut the bottom of the U-Channels

The Tracks are labeled as Left and Right on the top sides of the tracks, the top is indicated by the black "Keder Feeder" and the removable "Stopper"

1. Cutting the Tracks

   1. Measure from the BOTTOM OF THE POCKET BRACKETS TO THE FLOOR.
   2. Subtract 1/2" and cut from the bottom of the tracks.
   3. Remove the bottom cap from each track.
   4. Cut the track to the length.

⚠️ Make sure to always cut the bottom end of the track

The top cap is 1/8" thick, the bottom cap is 1/8" thick, this will guarantee you have the required 1/2" clearance between the cassette and top of the U-Channel for the door to swing open.

Step 8a: Securing the Tracks on Surface Mounted U-Channels

Tip: Use a countersink bit and countersunk screws for a clean look

1. Place the track jig on the back of the U-channel, align it with the edge of the track, mark the position, and drill a hole 1.5" deep.
2. Secure the track to the U-channel using 1 1/2" flanged screws.
3. Install the wheel stopper as shown in the illustration to prevent the wheel system from coming off the tracks.

4. Install the Wheel Stoppers

⚠️ DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP — Prevents the wheel system from coming out of the tracks.

Step 7b: Measuring and Installing Recessed Tracks

1. Cutting the U-Channels

   1. Measure the DISTANCE FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE POCKET TO THE FLOOR.

   2. Add 1" and cut the bottom of the U-Channels

The Tracks are labeled as Left and Right on the top sides of the tracks, the top is indicated by the black "Keder Feeder" and the removable "Stopper"

1. Cutting the Tracks

   1. Measure from the BOTTOM OF THE POCKET BRACKETS TO THE FLOOR.
   2. Subtract 1/2" and cut from the bottom of the tracks.
   3. Remove the bottom cap from each track.
   4. Cut the track to the length.

If recessed U-Channels are already installed, Skip to "Dis-assembling the Tracks"

1. Pre-drill the U-channel:
   • 2 holes for TOP, MIDDLE and BOTTOM.
   • 1 hole every 12 inches in spacing Attach the U-Channel beneath the brackets.
2. Secure both U-channels using the appropriate screws

Dis-assembling the Tracks

1. To remove the top cap, unscrew the two securing screws.
2. To remove the bottom cap, unscrew the two securing screws.

3. Remove the screws holding the spring clips along the front of the track
4. Push down on the spring clip and rotate it outward to release it from the track.

5. Pull out the V-track from the outer track.
   
6. Pre-drill holes to secure the track to the U-channel.
7. Use the centerline inside the track as a guide.
   
8. Reattach the top and bottom caps and secure them with the two provided screws.

Installing the Tracks in the Recessed U-Channels

1. Insert the track into the U-channel.
2. Secure the track to the U-channel using the appropriate screws.

⚠️ Shims may be needed at the back of the track for leveling. (Shims are not provided.)

3. Insert the V-track at a slight angle.
4. Once the V-track is inside the track, rotate it to position it correctly.

5. To reinstall the spring clip, push it between the V-track and the outer track, then rotate it into place.
6. Ensure the hole in the spring clip aligns with the holes in the outer track.
7. Reattach the spring clips and secure them with the screws you removed earlier.

Step 8: Feeding the Keder into the V-Tracks

1. Slide the Tracks at an angle into the U-Channels into the U-channels.
2. Lift the Weight Bar manually and feed the Keder into the "Keder Feeder" on the top of the tracks
3. Ensure the wheels are correctly positioned and properly aligned with the track for smooth operation.

Step 9: Fine Tuning

1. Fine tune the upper and lower limits.
2. Refer to the Motor Programming Guide.
   • KAOS: SI KAOS Motor Programming Guide
   • KAOS: Somfy Motor Programming Guide
   • Check the shade for level and the tracks for plum to ensure the fabric is rolling without telescoping or binding.

🔧 Troubleshooting

Common issues and solutions for your KAOS system

Shade Won't Fully Raise or Lower

Possible Cause

Motor programming limits are off or not set

Solution

Reset the motor and reprogram upper/lower limits

Tools Needed:

• Remote control that came with the shade
• Ladder (if needed)
• SI KAOS Motor Programming Guide
• Alpha Motor Programming Guide
• Somfy Motor Programming Guide

⚠️ Warning: Always ensure shade is fully lowered before beginning motor reprogramming to avoid damage, and easier access to motor head.

Step 1:

Select the Guide above for the motor you have.

Step 2:

Using the appropriate Motor Guide, Factory reset the motor

Step 3:

In the same Motor Guide, Re-set the UPPER and LOWER Limits.

💡 Tip: Test the limits multiple times after programming to ensure consistent operation.

🔄 If problem persists: Check for physical obstructions or mechanical issues:

Telescoping or Weight Bar Level IssuesWeight Bar Binding or Track Noise

Telescoping or Weight Bar is not level

Possible Cause

Fabric roll has telescoped

Cassette or brackets are not level

Weight Bar not in Tracks/Tracks are not installed

Tracks are too close together, or too far apart

Solution

Fix telescoped fabric roll

⚠️ Warning: This will require 3 people, one on each side, and someone operating the remote.

Step 1:

Remove the weight bar from the tracks

Step 2:

Unroll the shade all the way to the tube

Step 3:

Verify the fabric is centered on the tube

Step 4:

With someone on each side, slowly roll up the shade while applying downward pressure as the shades roll up guiding the keder to stack evenly.

⚠️ Warning: The first 3 FULL wraps are the most Important

Step 5:

Continue to roll the shade UP while applying pressure and keeping the keder aligned on both sides

• If telescoping happens while rolling up, roll down before telescoping started, and continue rolling up while applying downward pressure, guiding the fabric as it moves until it stacks evenly on both sides.

Step 6:

Install the weight bar into the tracks

Step 7:

Cycle the shade 2-3 times

✓ GOOD - Proper alignment

✗ WRONG - Telescoped fabric

Solution

Re-level the cassette and verify bracket positions

Solution

Ensure weight bar is installed into the Track System, this will help keep it properly aligned.

Solution

Check track placement: The gap from the end of the weight bar to the edge of the tracks should be approximately 1/8" on both sides

Solution

Lower the shade past its LOWER LIMIT to completely unroll the fabric until the metal tube is exposed. Verify the fabric is centered on the tube (there will be a 45 degree cut in the fabric that will align with the end of the tube).

💡 Tip: This is also a good time to verify the Tube itself is level.

💡 Tip: Fabric will slide easily within the tube.

Weight Bar binding or noise coming from the tracks

Possible Cause

Improper Guide Wheel positioning/alignment

Guide Wheels not spinning freely

Tracks are not plum or properly aligned

Inner V-Track is dirty

⚠️ Warning: Never force a shade if tracks are binding. This can damage the fabric or motor. Always identify and fix the root cause first.

Solution

Adjust the guide wheels for proper placement within the track

🔧 Tools Needed:

• Pick tool or small flathead head screwdriver
• Flashlight or good lighting (Head Lamps are recommended)
• Screwdrivers
• Drill and Bits
• Tape Measure
• 4-6' Level
• Shims (if needed)
• Can of compressed air
• Silicone Based Lubricant

Step 1:

Visually inspect the guide wheels in the track

Step 2:

Make sure the Guide Wheels are spinning freely.

Step 3:

Test shade operation and fine-tune as needed

Solution

Track alignment and positioning

Step 1:

Remove any screws securing the tracks to the U-Channels

Step 2:

Cycle the shade 2 to 3 times with the tracks "floating" in the U-Channels. This will help align the tracks in the optimal distance

Step 3:

Make sure the tracks are plum/level. (See the Telescoping Section)

Solution

Track cleaning and maintenance

Step 1:

Make sure the length of the inner V-track is clean and free of debris.

Step 2:

Use a can of compressed air to blow out any dust, dirt, or debris that may have accumulated.

Step 3:

Use a Silicone based lubricant on the Keder for smoother operation.

💡 Tip: This should be done every 6 months to a year as basic maintenence.

⚠️ Warning: Only use a Silicone based lube on the Fabric/V-Tracks, and a Dry Lithium/Graphite lubricant on any other moving parts. DO NOT use WD-40.

Wrinkles in the Fabric

Possible Cause

Fabric not properly tensioned during installation

Fabric misaligned on the roller tube

Improper fabric handling during installation or shipping

Extreme temperature fluctuations in outdoor conditions

Shade stored in cold conditions before installation

Fabric compressed or folded during transport

Solution

Check and adjust fabric tension

Step 1:

Lower the shade fully and inspect how the fabric rolls onto the tube

Step 2:

Ensure fabric is rolling evenly without bunching or shifting side to side

Step 3:

If fabric is misaligned, manually adjust its position on the tube when fully lowered

Solution

Natural outdoor conditioning and sun exposure

💡 Tip: Outdoor materials often self-correct wrinkles through natural sun exposure and temperature cycling over 1-3 weeks.

Step 1:

Operate the shade daily, extending it during peak sun hours to allow natural heating

Step 2:

Leave shade extended during warm, sunny days to let solar heat naturally relax the material

Step 3:

Cycle the shade multiple times during temperature changes (morning/evening) to help work out creases

Solution

Steam treatment for stubborn wrinkles

🔧 Tools Needed:

• Garment steamer
• Clean microfiber cloth
• Extension cord (if needed for outdoor access)
• Water for steamer reservoir

Step 1:

With shade fully extended, use the garment steamer, holding it 6-8 inches away from the material

Step 2:

Work systematically across wrinkled areas, allowing steam to penetrate while gently stretching the material

Step 3:

Allow material to dry while maintaining tension, then cycle the shade several times

💡 Tip: Steam is gentler than direct heat and works well with outdoor materials. Work in sections for best results.

💡 Prevention Tip: When possible, install shades during warmer weather and allow the material to acclimate to outdoor conditions gradually.
