For Fixed Frame Screens with Slate/Slate AT/Pure Gray & White/Pure Gray & White AT Projection Material
At Screen Innovations, our screens are engineered for performance and durability. Occasionally, minor wrinkles or impressions may appear in the screen material—typically due to shipping, handling, or environmental changes. This guide provides step-by-step instructions to restore your screen to optimal flatness and viewing performance.
Removing Wrinkles from SI Fixed Frame Screens
Applicable to:
-
Fixed frames using the post tensioning system (current models)
-
Older models using snap systems
✅: Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
-
Ensure Proper Tensioning
-
For Post System: Confirm all tensioning posts are fully inserted and seated within the perimeter channel. Begin installation from the center of each side, working outward to distribute tension evenly.
-
For Snap System: Verify that all snaps are engaged and evenly spaced. Replace any missing or loose snaps.
-
-
Apply Gentle Heat
-
Use a household hairdryer on low or medium heat.
-
Hold the dryer 12–18 inches from the screen surface and move in a circular motion across wrinkled areas.
-
Focus on the back side of the screen if accessible for better results.
-
Do not use heat guns or direct contact tools.
-
-
Allow the Material to Relax
-
After tensioning and gentle heating, let the screen rest for 12–24 hours in a warm room (70–80°F / 21–27°C). Wrinkles will often self-correct during this time.
-
-
Check the Frame
-
Ensure the frame is perfectly square and rigid. A bent or loose frame can prevent proper tensioning and introduce visual artifacts.
-
Removing Impressions or Surface Dents
Impressions may appear from temporary pressure on the screen surface. These are cosmetic and typically correctable.
✅ Restoration Instructions
-
Hairdryer + Gentle Pressure
-
Lightly heat the dented area using a hairdryer.
-
Apply gentle circular pressure using a soft, clean cloth or your finger (wrapped in a microfiber cloth).
-
Do not press hard—allow the material to expand and return to form naturally.
-
-
Warm Room Method
-
Leave the screen in a temperature-controlled space for 24–48 hours.
-
The PVC material is thermally responsive and may self-heal over time.
-
-
Optional: Warm Damp Cloth Technique
-
Dampen a clean microfiber cloth with warm water (not hot).
-
Lay it over the affected area for a few minutes, then remove and reheat gently with a hairdryer.
-
Never soak or scrub the screen.
-
Fish Scaling
"Fish scaling" is a cosmetic issue that can occur primarily with fixed-frame projection screens. It typically presents as horizontal rippling or wrinkling towards one side of the screen, resembling the appearance of fish scales.
This issue is often caused by one of the following:
-
Improper material storage or handling – Storing or shipping the screen in a vertical position can cause the fabric to settle unevenly, leading to distortion at the bottom.
-
Incorrect fabric rolling during assembly – If the screen material was not rolled properly before installation, tension inconsistencies may develop during transit.
Solution:
The recommended fix is to gently steam the affected area while the screen material is tensioned on the frame. A standard garment steamer works well to relax the wrinkles without damaging the surface.
⚠️ Important Care Tips
-
Never iron or use high-heat tools on the screen.
-
Avoid prolonged contact with sharp objects, fingernails, or textured surfaces.
-
Store and transport the screen carefully to prevent future impressions.
-
Maintain consistent room temperature and humidity for long-term performance.
